How to Respond When Your Kids Mention Your Family’s Wealth
I have three kids under ten, and lately they’ve been bringing up that we’re “rich.” They and their friends talk about it at school, and it’s been bothering me. I often don’t know what to say to my children when this topic comes up. We live in a fairly well-off area and drive cars that are typical for the neighborhood. Our house is probably worth more than most in the area, but not because it’s large. It simply has some unique features that clearly signal financial success.
I dislike being flashy, and everything we have is something we enjoy, not something meant to impress others. I’m looking for guidance on how others handle this with their kids. What do you say, and how do you respond when your children bring up wealth or social status?
